The relationship between a school and its community must be upheld. Parents and whanau in a school must be informed if there is any move to convert a state school, or if a new school is being introduced. However, there is currently no understanding of how parents and families would be notified or what the consultation process would be in this situation.

Take Action

We are supporting our members and communities to participate in local consultations, or to organise their own events to support the discussion around charter schools. We recommend having a conversation with your friends and colleagues well before a conversion process begins. This allows you to be ahead of the conversation, and to make your position clear to your school board and leadership.

Some of our PPTA branches have already passed a resolution against charter conversion. This is a statement that the teachers at a school have made to affirm their desire to remain a public school. See if your school has made the resolution here.
